Introduction

Ayurveda is the oldest surviving complete medical system in the world with a long record of clinical experience. Ayurveda literally means "the knowledge of life". It derived from word - ‘ayus' that means-life and ‘ved' that means-knowledge – its origins go back nearly 5000 years. It was practiced by the same spiritual rishis, who laid the foundations of the Vedic civilization in India. Many ancient sages established the theories of Ayurveda after rigorous testing in several ways and proving the same with reasoning.

Ayurveda, the world’s most comprehensive, personalized, holistic and sustainable health system based on sound philosophical and scientific principles and not on mysticism, magic and anecdotes. It is based on its unique principles of health and disease, physiology, psychology, pathology, pharmacology and diagnostics.

Health

According to Ayurveda, health is not merely freedom from disease. Ayurveda defines health as balance of the three doshas (biological humors), the agni (digestion and metabolism), the dhatus (tissues) and the malas (excretion), as well as mental, emotional and spiritual well being.

Thus, Ayurveda presents the most complete definition of health that is in coherence to that of World Health Organization, which defines health as “a state of physical, mental, social and spiritual well being and not merely an absence of disease.

It is essential that body, mind and soul be in an excellent state so that the individual can perform his functions and fulfill his role in life, which in Vedic philosophy is called dharma

AYURVEDIC PHILOSOSPHY

Panchmahbhoot sharir (Five elements) The Universe, according to Ayurveda is composed of five basic elements - Pancha Mahabhoota viz. space (akash), air (vayu), fire (agni), water (jala) and earth (prithvi). As the human body is similarly constituted, there is a fundamental similarity between universe and human being. A healthy balance between the microcosm (human being) and the macrocosm (universe) is the basis of health.

Objective
