Hair is a protein filament that grows from hair follicles found in the skin. Most common interest in hair is focused on hair growth, hair types and hair care.
Because of improper and unhealthy lifestyle, diet, Stress and exposure to harmful chemicals, hair problems like hair fall, graying of hair, split hair, greasy hair, dandruff etc are on rise. And the absence of comprehensive care towards hair problems makes it worst. Ayurveda consider hair as a byproduct of Bone tissue and certain body type of people suffers more often with hair problems than others. For better insight of hair problem, it would be significant to understand Normal hair structure, its type and hair cycle.

There are four types of hair: straight, wavy, curly, and kinky.
TYPE 1: Straight
1a | Straight (Fine/Thin) | Hair tends to be very soft, shiny, oily, poor at holding curls but difficult to damage. |
1b | Straight (Medium) | Hair characterized by volume and body |
1c | Straight (Coarse) | Hair tends to be bone-straight and difficult to curl, Common in Asian women. |
TYPE 2: Wavy
2a | Wavy (Fine/Thin) | Hair has definite "S" pattern and is usually receptive to a variety of styles |
2b | Wavy (Medium) | Can tend to be frizzy and a little resistant to styling |
2c | Wavy (Coarse) | Frizzy or very frizzy with thicker waves; often more resistant to styling |
TYPE 3: Curly
3a | Curly (loose) | Curly hair that usually presents a definite "S" pattern and tends to combine thickness, fullness, body and/or frizziness. |
3b | Curly (Tight) | As 3a but with tighter curling |
TYPE 4: Kinky
4a | Kinky (Soft) | Hair tends to be very fragile, tightly coiled and can feature curly patterning |
4b | Kinky (Wiry) | As 4a but with less visible (or no) curly patterning |
- Anagen phase: The anagen phase is the phase of active growth, approximately 80% to 90% o our hairs are in this phase at any given time.
- Catagen phase- Catagen phase marks follicular regression, i.e Hair begins to shut down and eventually stops activity, approximately 2% of our hairs are in this phase at any given time.
- Telogen phase- Telogen phase represents a resting period, approximately 10% to 18% of our hairs are in this phase at any given time
During telogen phase hair root shrivels up and the hair falls out.
Several circumstances or causative factors alter the hair growth rhythm. As a result, as much as 30%-40% of the hairs can cycle into telogen phase
As we have seen, Hairs can be long and wavy, short and straight, frizzy and unmanageable, or smooth and shiny. Hair comes in many different lengths, styles, colors, and textures. Every one of us no matter what kind of hair we have fall victim to at least one hair problem at some point in life.
