Ayurveda perspective on Common Hair Problems
Ayurvedic literature like Chraksamhita, Shushurut smahita, Ashtang sangraha,Sharangdhar smahita, Bhavprakash and Baishjyaratnawali had explicitly mention about Hair, diet affecting hair, disease related with hair and their management. Aacharya Charaka and Shushruta mention hair as a "mala "of "Asthi Dhatu" whereas Aacharya sharanadar mention it as" Upadhatu " of "Maaja Dhatu".
Aacharya Sushruta has mention samprapti of khalitya -
“Romakupanugam pittam vaaten saha murchitam |
Prachyavayati romani tata: shleshma sahshonitam||
Runadhi romkupanstu taato anyesham sambhav|
Tad indraluptam khalitya rujyeti ch vibhajyate||”. Su. Ni. 13/32-33
Due to untoward diet and life style Vaata dosha and Pitta dosha gets vitiated and targets the hair follicles, results in to hairfall. It is followed by vitiation of Rakta and kapha dosha which leads to inflammatory changes and complete closure of hair follicle. Strotasa that gets involved in variousdiseases related to Hair are-Rasavaha , Asthiaha , Majjavaha , Swedavaha and Purishavha strotas.
Causative Factors/ Nidan
Virudh aahara vihara, excesses use of Lavan ras, pitta vardhaka aahara vihara, hina, mithya, and aatiyoga of aahara, nidra and bhramachaya, consumption of dushi visha, use of polluted water, living in polluted environment, non-application of oil on the scalp.
Factors responsible for hair problems
Air and water pollutants, phototoxic effects of sunlight, minerals in water, chlorine in swimming pools, using a harsh shampoo, washing hair too often, perms and dyes, hair treatments (Excessive blow-drying or use of a curling iron or straightening iron, chemicals in relaxers, hair straightners), male pattern baldness (Androgenic alopecia), nutrition - deficiencies of Biotin, Protein, Zinc, Iron, copper, Hypervitaminosis A, malnutrition, infections, fungal infection, folliculitis, dissecting cellulitis, secondary syphilis, demodex folliculorum, stress, hormonal changes like those in pregnancy, puberty, menopause and hypothyroidism.
